[...] Should I get an account now, and really beef up my networking? Well, I personally think the jury is still out - I don’t think it is for everyone. There is a super-useful way to use LinkedIn (I’ll blog on that in a later post, after Monday’s carnival), there are annoyances, there is the ettiquite issue, and of course there is the question of whether the connections you make will really be quality connections. etc. My advice right now is yes, go get an account, especially if you don’t need it. More and more folks are signing up and its more likely that you get an invitation… its better to begin to build this virtual world now than when you really need it (and may look desperate).
[...] This week I am participating in the Jibber Jobber Blog Carnival. Career experts, recruiters, and job seekers are sharing their insights into the following scenario. You just lost your job and you haven’t stayed in touch with your network. What can you do in the next six weeks to help mobilize/grow your network and what job search tactics will you use to get your search on track. Here are my thoughts… [...]

[...] 5) The recession of 2001 is when my partner decided to close down our company, UTA Business Systems, which was a major supplier of point of sale systems to the delivery industry. I had become partners with him because I needed an investor to take my company to the next level. I had started the company back in 1988 when I was working for a regional restaurant company while evaluating POS for our delivery stores, decided that there was nothing acceptable and that I could design something better. I worked for the restaurant company while at the same time I worked on the delivery software/hardware business (in my spare time;-)) It was devastating when the company closed, and a good friend of mine and I tried to buy the software for $2MM, but my ex-partner wouldn’t sell…. (asshole). So I ended up in the job search and finally becoming a recruiter. That part of the story is related in my post here which I wrote for Jason’s blog carnival. What most people don’t know is that I spent the next 9 months away from my family living in Atlanta by myself… and was just starting my second week of work when 9-11 happened. My family lived less than 10 miles from the Pentagon and I had worked in an office less than 2 miles from there. I had many friends who worked there as well as having been at the academy at the same time as the pilot of the plane that hit the Pentagon. It was a lonely time. [...]

Hope it has information that is helpful to some folks and is at least entertaining.

[...] Now I’m participating in the blog carnival that Jason is hosting, so I won’t go into all the detail of the post that I am preparing for that event, but I do have a few ideas on how Jason or you can help someone (including yourself) get connected recruiters and utilize them. It has been a plan of mine, since posting comments on Jason’s blog on Love your Recruiter to do a series on how to best utilize the services of a recruiter. Now seems as good a time as any. This will be the first post in the series and it may be a bit short, but it will be a start at least. I think the series will tie in nicely with my Recruiters Bill of Rights. [...]
