Happy Layoff-versary!

It was exactly nine years ago, on Friday the 13th, that I drove away from my last job for the last time.

This is not a story of a guy ready to conquer the world, voluntarily leaving his job to get rich online… this is a story of a normal guy who felt betrayed by the company he had worked so hard for… a story of a guy who was scared out of his mind, wondering how he was going to make ends meet… a story of not knowing what the next few days, weeks or months had in store.

Here we are, nine years later, and I’m starting a certification program for career professionals to become certified on the system that I conceptualized, and helped build, and helped fund, and have run…

It’s a beautiful day, no matter what weather.com says!

Organize Your Job Search (what does that mean?)

Today I had an interesting chat with Liz, who many of you know.  She was hired to do quality assurance, and has morphed into the role of project manager, business analyst, right hand to me, etc.  Our chat actually is a result of a question that I sent to her last week. I proposed:

Liz, does JibberJobber really help a job seeker organize their job search?

I asked this question because:

(a) I think it is healthy to evaluate and re-evaluate your offering (that is true for job seekers, too!  What is your offering? Is it relevant?).

(b) I think it’s important that my entire team asks questions like this about our products, and I wanted her to think about it.

(c) I have been thinking lately that we are missing the mark on certain value offerings. In other words, I think the answer to the question is: perhaps we are doing an okay job, but we are not doing an excellent job.

When we chatted about this last week she asked for a few days to gather her thoughts.  Today at noon we met and I was blown away (elated) with her ideas.  She had five proposals that would greatly enhance the value and experience for job seekers.  Doing any of the five will bring JibberJobber to the next level.  Doing all of the five will help us be the leader in this space.

We are going to do all of the five. I’m not going to post them here because my competitors like to read my blog, and I’d rather strengthen JibberJobber before I give them my development plan, but I wanted to let you know that we are very much interested in improving the system, and staying ahead of the curve, and offering significant value, and we are investing in all of those things.

JibberJobber Certification for Coaches: Schedule

I have hesitated putting this in a post because all of this seems so simple to me… I could do this in my sleep.  In fact, I have done this in my sleep, many times, over the last nine years :)

Anyway, here’s what you can expect over the next six weeks, if you are in the JibberJobber Certification program:

Week 1: What is JibberJobber, history of, competitors, general features, why people would or should use it, who it is for… overview of the 6 weeks, and a bit of housekeeping (how to access the recordings). I might add more stuff, but I want to make sure we go deep each week.

Week 2: How To add contacts, companies and jobs.  Focus on “getting data into the system”

Week 3: Log Entries and Action Items (the glue and perhaps the central point of JibberJobber)

Week 4: Email2Log – how to set up, the basics, forwarding to the server (and not a recipient), advanced features

Week 5: Getting Data Out: List Panels, exporting data, getting email reminders for action items, reports

Week 6: Kitchen Sink (other stuff), including the coach landing page, video library, expense report (maybe), the Job Journal, Interview Prep…

I’ve modeled this after the certification course I did for The Academies, on LinkedIn, which I designed and taught for a few cycles.  The idea of this certification is to go deeper… so where I might spend an hour and go lightly into each of the topics above, by the end of each class you’ll have a much greater understanding of the what-and-how of that particular class.

I want career professionals to get to a certain level of proficiency (a) specifically with JibberJobber, and (b) generally with organizational software for job seekers.  Whether you like JibberJobber at the end of the session, or you really dislike it, you’ll have a solid idea of what and how job seekers could organize their job search, and have a follow-up system that helps someone who’s in an intense networking mode.  I want to contribute to the prevention of career professionals handing out totally outdated paper-based tracking forms… this still happens.

JibberJobber Certification for Coaches (and other career professionals)

On Tuesday I’m starting a six week program for career professionals to get certified on JibberJobber.  I’ve priced this at $397, and discounted it to $97 for now.

Here’s an email that I sent out a week ago to my LinkedIn Group:

The certification classes will be recorded in case you can’t come. You’ll have access to the recordings through our video library.

Live classes are on Tuesday mornings, at 10am Mountain Time (9am PST, 11am CST, noon EST), for one hour.

There will be six live classes to specifically help you master JibberJobber, and better understand job search organization and tracking. Classes start on Tuesday January 12 and finish February 17. You will have until the end of February to finish the certification tests.

JibberJobber Certified Career Professionals should gain a better grasp of technology in general, and a more acute understanding of technology that job seekers (and professionals) need. This should increase the value that you bring to your clients.

Career Directors International will give you one CEU credit for every hour of learning (you should get six credits by the time the course is done).

Here’s a message I put on my LinkedIn Group a few weeks ago… and part of why I really want to see coaches and career professionals certified. In case you work at a career center, and think I’m talking about you, I am not. The person that did this back in 2006 is retired.

In 2006 I went to a university career center that was only about 40 minute from my house. My hope was to talk to as many career professionals as I could, and I was excited to talk to the director of the career center at this large university.

As I walked to the career center office I passed dozens of students, all on laptops and other devices. No one was talking to each other… they were all consumed by technology.

After a long wait in the waiting room, the director finally met with me. He first balked at the ridiculous name “JibberJobber,” saying that he couldn’t recommend something with a name that didn’t make any sense. He then asked why would anyone want to use a website to organize and track a job search… he has been, and would continue to recommend just buying 4×6 cards and stay organized with those.

I couldn’t believe it. This director, who was probably not far away from retirement, would tell all of those kids, who were glued to technology, to manage a complex process with a loose paper system?

I continue to see this today – career professionals who recommend a printout form, or a spreadsheet, when there are better, high-tech, sophisticated, long-lasting and long-term solutions like JibberJobber.

I can only imagine student after student eye-rolling at this director’s advice. Giving outdated or unsound advice will discredit everything else you say. You’ll have earned your reputation of being outdated, out of touch, etc.

Want A Response To Your Emails? Part 2

Here’s the other reason busy people aren’t responding to your emails: your emails got buried in their inbox.

Don’t think they don’t like you, or they don’t want to respond, or they don’t care about your message…

Sometimes, people are just really busy, and they keep getting emails… and your email drops to the bottom of the page. Or worse, your email drops to their second page, in which case it’s cast off to the winds.

This isn’t something you can fix – if they are busy, and their email has gotten the best of them, you aren’t going to go to their office and change their habits or systems… so what can you do?

There’s a simple solution that you have control over… and that is to to email the person again, with a fresh email.

Do it gently, do it tactfully, and do it as a reminder.  Don’t send the whole email before, don’t be condescending, or preachy, or assume you can teach or preach about email management… just sent a simple, gentle email.  I would suggest maybe 2 or 3 sentences, referring back to the other email, and possibly even offering an alternative response (like a phone call).

“Hi Jason, I’m just checking in on an email I sent you a couple of weeks ago about _____.  I just wanted to make sure this doesn’t fall off of your radar. I’m happy to have a short call about it, if you prefer that, instead of an email dialog.”

Make sure you end with a call-to-action, usually a question.

Sorry for not responding to your emails in a timely manner… but if you have sent emails that you want a response to, this might help.

Want People to Read and Respond to Your Emails? Part 1

I get a lot of emails every day.  I have 3,800 emails in my JibberJobber inbox, and over 15,000 emails in my Gmail inbox.  I know, it’ horrible.  I gave up on “zero inbox” a long time ago.

I recently saw a message that was many paragraphs.  This is simply too long.

Folks, if you want people to read your emails, be concise.  Short.  Keep the topics to one or two.  Make it easy for busy people to read in the very short time they give your email, and make it super easy for them to respond.  That means, let them know how to respond.

In the spirit of this message, I’m going to end this blog post with this one word: CONCISE!

The New Year is Finally Here: January 5

January 5th, 2015

Jan 1 has come and gone.

But today, the real New Year starts.  Pretty much every single “out of office” email I got in the last few weeks said “I’ll be back on January 5th”….!

So now what?  What are you doing TODAY?

No more excuses.  No more holidays.  It’s time to pick up the phone, send those emails, and get those lunch/coffee appointments.

I hope you’ve spent the last couple of weeks wisely!

Now, get to work!

What Will 2015 Hold For You? 2015 Theme: The Year of the Cookie

December was really interesting – we had a lot more signups and upgrades than what we normally saw in the last few Decembers.  I can tell that people are getting more serious about their personal career management.

I invite you to make 2015 a very purposeful year for personal and professional satisfaction.  This means that instead of letting things just happen to and around you, you empower yourself.

In a recent post on this blog, and an article on LinkedIn, I said that if you are working with a boss who drives you crazy (or, is an idiot), you could:

“Be Prepared.  The old Boy Scout motto is splendid.  Let’s say that you are unprepared to get laid off today.  If so, you are probably afraid of getting laid off, losing the paycheck, etc.  Where would you go??  However, let’s say you are prepared… and you get laid off.  You might be thankful that you got laid off!  Sure, you lost your job, but you are prepared (strong network, established brand, etc.).  If you want to change how you feel about being in a crummy situation, work on career management, which can give you a glimmer of hope, and help you feel less trapped.”

Yes! That’s what I did recently and have done several times over the long years of my career. When in a dysfunctional relationship/organization, one can become very demoralized. It’s important to review one’s achievements, goals, skills and desires. When I remind myself of what I have to offer, it makes it easier for me to do the work of finding other opportunities. The more I explore, the more empowered I become. Leaving is always hard, but when I am moving towards my goals, I am re-invigorated.

Pamela is doing on-purpose career management!

When you do on-purpose career management, the power shifts.  If you are at the will and mercy of your company (which can happen if they pay you enough, or have excellent benefits, or have somehow scared you into not leaving), they have the power.

When you do career-management things, you shift the power from the company to yourself.  A popular term I like to think of to make this more visual is “who has the cookie?”  When your employer has the power, or the cookie, you are subject to them.

Let’s make 2015 the year when we take the cookie back.

This is the year when we develop more, and deeper relationships.

This is the year when we really work on our personal brand.  Maybe we start a blog, or write a post on LinkedIn, or leave a comment on a discussion in a group you are in.

This is the year you really get into JibberJobber to manage and nurture relationships.  More than just gathering names, numbers and email addresses, let’s really focus on the relationships.

This is the year that we take the cookie back!

Happy new year! May this year be the year you grow and prosper!

The new year is here… there are just a few more days until people get back in the office… can’t wait until Jan 5th.

What have you done for the last few weeks, while things seemed to have slow down?  Hopefully a lot!  It was time to sharpen your saw!  If you haven’t, take the next few days so you can figure out how to hit the ground running on January 5th!

Hello 2016!

Just gotta get past the weekend, then next week we have no more excuses about how hard a job search is during the holiday…! It’s almost here… then, time to work!
