5 tricks to finding a job using an online job aggregator

A job aggregator collates various job postings from multiple sites (sometimes into the hundreds or thousands) in order to provide job seekers with comprehensive and wide-ranging search results.

Job aggregators work very much like a search engine, pulling in the top results of job vacancies on the internet. This is incredibly valuable for job seekers as it provides them with access to a multitude of available listings that they may not have found otherwise.

Five advantages of using a job aggregator to search for jobs:

  • A job aggregator site collects a variety of online job postings from an assembly of sites, storing these listings in a massive, central database, making these listings conveniently accessible to job seekers
  • Aggregators pull from a wide scope of sites, including postings from employer sites, classified adverts, reputable job boards, job portals, and more
  • Due to the large inclusion of vacancies from all over the web, the job seeker’s search is made significantly easier and less challenging, as they have immediate access to a large database of relevant vacancies, saving them considerable time
  • Aggregators provide listings that the job seeker may not have come across otherwise
  • Aggregator’s focus solely on job search, and they are able to display job postings by region, sector, date posted, full time vs. part time jobs, jobs that were posted by recruiters and those that were posted by employers, and so forth

One of the biggest aggregators is www.zigo.co.za, with a notable number of results that are current, reputable, and where the job seeker can search thousands of jobs quickly and easily. Job seekers can search according to job title, company, or by typing in relevant keywords, as well as according to region.

These listings include jobs in the USA, the US as well as in South Africa. Recruiters are able to post job listings on the site, and job seekers are able to upload their CV as well as browse jobs, essentially making it a one-stop shop.

The benefits of job aggregator sites are myriad, providing a comprehensive search with all of the relevant bases covered. Aggregator sites are currently being used significantly more than traditional job boards and recruitment agencies (that once led the job search market), specifically due to their convenience, speed and all-inclusive results.

JibberJobber Mobile App for Android

Yesterday I announced the JibberJobber app for android is available in the Google Play store.  You can check it out here: JibberJobber Android App. The iOS app should be out soon…

Here’s a screenshot of the homepage, with my annotations in red.

1. The back button is on every page, which you’ll use to navigate back to where you came from.

5. If you click “Contacts,” or “Companies,” etc. you’ll go to a page to see and search for your Contacts, Companies, etc.  On the right, if you click the + button, you can add new records.

This is Phase I… there’s more to come.  We need your feedback on any problems you come up against, anything that is not intuitive, and as important, any features you want to see included in the next releases.

New: The JibberJobber Mobile App for Android

Yesterday I posted Announcement #1.  This is Announcement #2.

Today we released the Android app for JibberJobber.  If you are a JibberJobber user, please download this free app and let us know what you think.  The iOS app should be released soon, although Apple has a longer release process… so I really don’t know when that will be available.

This app is pretty cool.  We’ve worked on the design, development, and testing for months.  It’s also what I call “version 1.” The most important thing we need at this point is YOUR FEEDBACK.

If there is anything that doesn’t work right, or any part of the design that is not intuitive, or if there are features that you need/want, please let us know. Use the Contact page to let us know what we can do to improve (and, what you like).  Your feedback is critical so that we can make Phase II even better.

We’d appreciate any great rankings. If you have a problem with anything, please contact us immediately so we can get it fixed… that’s a lot more effective than leaving a rant or low rank on the app store.

Want to Work for JibberJobber?

Over the last almost-ten years I have gotten many a resume and email asking what our openings were.  Frankly, there were none. But now there is.

Oh, while we’re talking about it, let me say that yes, last night we had a big release (which means my team has been working crazy hours developing, testing, debugging, etc.), where we enhanced our job postings (aka, job board).  This enhancement wasn’t what I would call monumental… that’s coming down the road. This was just a clean-up so that it was a lot easier to post a job on JibberJobber.

Companies can now post jobs on JibberJobber.

If you are ready now, mouse over Jobs, then click on Post a Job.  We’ll make this even easier in the coming weeks.

Wait… you mean to say that you didn’t even know you could post a job on JibberJobber?  Put your cool opportunities in front of our smart, engaged users?  Yeah, we’ve actually had that for a few years, but it was not done very well.  So we cleaned it up.  And we have some things that I think are revolutionary to the job search, job postings, and hiring process coming down the line.

There are two really big problems in my world (that is, the world of JibberJobber). Well, there are more than two, but I’m working on these two right now.

First, the job search process is broken.  Specifically, job postings and job boards are broken. Or as Nick Corcodilos says, ineffective.  Here’s a post that can make job seekers cry into their cheerios. Here’s an interview that is a must watch.  Why is job postings a multi-billion dollar industry if it doesn’t work very well?  It’s not going away… and I think I have some ideas that will increase the effectiveness for both job seekers and employers.  Stay tuned over the next few months.

Job Postings, Salaries, Depends on Experience #DownWithDOE

There is an excellent blog post written nonprofit expert Vu Le, titled When you don’t disclose salary range on a job posting, a unicorn loses its wings. I think that not putting salaries on a job posting is simply bad.  But it has become the trend.  Vu Le gives logical arguments as to why companies who post jobs should put a salary range.  Read his post. (and, his website is titled Nonprofit with Balls… here’s an excellent explanation of why he used “balls”)

I Want To Empower You

A few years ago I had an epiphany.  While doing some exercises on mission and vision for JibberJobber, and for yourself, I narrowed down my own mission and purpose to that of empowering YOU.

I created JibberJobber ten years ago because as a job seeker, I felt grossly unempowered.

I wrote my book, I’m on LinkedIn – Now What???, because I felt unempowered and confused with LinkedIn.

I worked hard to get 30 day passes to Pluralsight for my users, and reward you for learning, because knowledge can be empowering.

Everything I’ve done in the last 10 years have been because of things I’ve seen where we, as job seekers (and I believe we are all job seekers, even if we are “happily employed”), can have more personal empowerment.  Where we just need a bit more knowledge, or a bit more tools.

Soon, I will announce another movement to empower you.  This announcement will give you a bit more knowledge, and a bit more tools, but more, it will give you significant opportunity.

We will give you the opportunity to earn money.

We will give you the opportunity to fill a gap on your resume.

We will give you the opportunity to develop your soft skills.

We will give you the opportunity to network differently.

This opportunity is not a handout. Instead, it is an opportunity that meets you where you are, and relies on you to work.  But I know you aren’t afraid of that.

We’ve been working on this for years, and have been designing and developing this for months. Stay tuned for a full announcement, hopefully this week…!

You Are Always Being Interviewed, 24×7

As a manager and business owner, I am always looking for people to be on my team, even when I don’t have a position open.  I’m always watching for someone with something special… customer service, ambition, etc.

I think there are thousands of people in my position who are continually watching and looking.  That means that we are always being interviewed.  Let me emphasize ALWAYS.  You are interviewed (aka, watched) when you walk in a room, when you look at your phone too many times, when you say something nice or rude to anyone, when you show that you are engaged or disengaged in a conversation… always.

This morning I was reading how Afterburner hires.  Afterburner is a cool consulting company that hires veterans who become business consultants… Jim Murphy shared this part of the hiring process (read the article here):

When he does hire, the first step in the interviewing process is to take the candidate out for a fancy restaurant dinner, the kind a client CEO might host. The interviewee is escorted to the bar to swap military stories with the interviewers. While the Afterburner people are limited to two drinks, the candidate can have as many as he or she wants. At dinner the interviewers watch how the candidate behaves, which fork he or she uses. Murphy says he wants people with the business poise to sit with C-suite clients.

I wonder how many people at that interview think that, while swapping military stories, they are being watched on how many drinks they order. Or on which fork he or she uses.  I’m sure they are watched on every little detail of how they interact at that dinner.

This interview might seem casual, but it’s a tool to see how you would act with a company owner, as if you were the consultant.  Would you embarrass the company?

This is one example of how we are being watched. An interview isn’t just about what we say, how smart we are, how we say it… it’s about a lot more than that.  When I “interview” people informally, I am immediately wondering these two things (among others):

– would they represent my company well?

– would they ruin, or add to, my culture?

So what do we do with this information?

Act nicely. Act professionally.  Realize that what we do or say might be the thing that gets us the job… or adds a few more months to our job search.

Spouse’s Role in a Job Search, and under 5% Unemployment Rate

I just got pinged from a blog post, which included a link to one of my most favorite blog posts.  Joyce is a photographer in Houston, and wrote about her husband’s layoff.  Please read this. For all of the politicians celebrating the terrific under 5% unemployment rate, this is the reality of today’s world, when a layoff happens:

In her post, Joyce links to a post I wrote six years ago, titled The Spouse’s Role In Your Job Search.  I have 13 points there… please read that, too, and share it with people who need to read it.

In my comment to Joyce, I wrote:

I just read about the super low unemployment rate that everyone in the U.S. should be celebrating… just like had 10 years ago when I was in transition. It felt like everyone was happy about how great the economy was, but in my house, the unemployment rate was 100%

A low unemployment rate when I was unemployed meant that there was something wrong with me.  Nothing made sense in that logic, but it didn’t help my thinking or attitude.

This is why I do what I do.  Because there are real families and relationships and lives impacted.

Income Security Amid Layoffs

Tis the season to get laid off. And you thought this time of the year was the best time to get a job!

Well, sure, it is a great time to get a job.  But layoffs are still happening.  And they will, forever. Autodesk lays off 925 people, BP will lay off 7,000 people after a “damaging fourth quarter”, and  Yahoo will recorrect with a sayonara to 1,700 people, to “revive company growth.”

Those are just some of the big ones.  There are gobs of little layoffs.

As I talk to job seekers and JibberJobber users I realize that many of them have the same feeling that I had in my job search: why work so hard just to land a job that you might not like, at a company that might have a crummy culture, working for a boss who really should be your employee, and having the promise of job security that is as solid as vapor.

Let’s reconsider what a job is.  A job is simply one revenue/income stream.  We really should have multiple income streams.  When you have, say, three income streams, and you lose one, it hurts, but it doesn’t hurt as much as much as losing one income stream… if you only have one!

When I was hitting rock bottom during my job search, I came to terms with this idea. I figured what I really needed was money to pay my bills.  I didn’t care if that mean I got a paycheck every other week, or once every 10 years… as long as it was legal, moral and ethical, I was open to it.

Realizing this helped me realize that any future jobs I would have would mean I had another revenue stream… but that that didn’t have to be my sole revenue stream.

See where I’m going with all of this?

HOW CAN YOU CREATE OTHER REVENUE STREAMS?  I guarantee you that the people who have multiple revenue streams have different feelings, and are further ahead, than people who don’t have other income streams, when the layoffs come.

I’m not talking about job security, which to a large degree is out of our control. I’m talking about income security.
